Graham and I purchased Miners Camp in the beautiful Marlborough Sounds in 2016 and have been working to turn it into accommodation for Queen Charlotte Track walkers and a sustainable farm, providing as much of the food we and our guests can eat while increasing the protection of the land, water ways and wild life of this beautiful area.
Our animals are super friendly and our guests love to hand feed many of them, great for keeping the kids entertained. Our friendly bees pollinate fruit and vegetable plants and make honey from the manuka trees on the surrounding hills.
Our Mission
To live in harmony with our environment, to protect it and leave it in a better place for future generations. To share our little slice of paradise with our guests.
Guests Can Help
-
Feed lambs in the spring - morning and evening
-
Collect eggs - early afternoon
-
Harvest vegetables, herbs and edible flowers that will be used to make the fantastic farm meals - 4pm each day.
What we have achieved
-
Encouraging worms. When we arrived there were no worms in the pastures or gardens. We have a project to use chipped orchard prunings, grass clippings, animal manure and potash to create compost and mulch for gardens and fruiting trees.
-
Replacing plastic wind shelter with natural manuka brush woven into fences.
-
Plantings of rush seedlings/seeds along water ways.
-
Construction of a sediment trap to slow rain runoff into our stream.
-
Recycle animal manure through gardens to reduce nutrient runoff into waterways.
-
Construction of interlocked wooden cabins in the camping ground.
